Joseph Opoku Gakpo

Joseph Opoku Gakpo is a Ghanaian communications professional with more than a decade’s experience working as a science, environment, agriculture and rural development journalist. He currently works with Ghana’s largest private media house, the Multimedia Group Limited (operators of Joy FM, Joy News TV and www.myjoyonline.com) as a broadcast and online journalist. He produces documentaries and other content for radio, television and online platforms. He previously worked as correspondent in Ghana’s parliament for the media organization for 5 years.

Joseph has been recognized with ten local and international awards, including the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ’s) best video reporter of the year in 2018. His stories on rural development challenges in Ghana have helped at least 15 communities secure water, education, health, and electricity infrastructure from government and philanthropists.

Joseph is a Global Leadership Fellow with US based Cornell University’s Alliance for Science Program. He is also an AgBioFEWS (Agricultural Biotechnology in Our Evolving Food, Energy and Water Systems) Fellow at North Carolina State University’s Genetic Engineering and Society (GES) Center. He holds an undergraduate degree in agricultural biotechnology from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and a master’s degree in communication studies from the University of Ghana.

He is founder of the Opoku Gakpo Foundation – a philanthropic organization working to improve quality of education in rural Ghana; coordinator of science promotion organization Alliance for Science Ghana, and Deputy General Secretary of the Ghana Agricultural and Rural Development Journalists Association (GARDJA). He is also Director of communications firm Revolutionary Minds Communications (RM Communications) in Ghana.
